CASE STUDY

UNLOCKING THE VALUE OF PETRONAS’ ENGINEERING DATA

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Partner: MECIP
Year: 2020 – 2024
Project Type: Data Extraction & Database Creation

Background
& Challenge

Petronas needed to create a consolidated flange register,  linking all the flange management data with the isometrics, all within a consistent framework.  With more than 10 different contractors and many sub-contractors this process had not been digitised and the information was scattered across the drawings and inspection reports, which could not be aligned reliably. The client was struggling to map all the 250,000 marked up hard copy drawings with the 250,000 CAD generated drawings. The sheer volume of Piping Isometrics would have made this undertaking unthinkable without DIGATEX AIML technology.

DIGATEX’s
Solution

DIGATEX processed the Piping Isometrics, identifying each flanged joint, understanding the topology of the Isometric and assigning a unique tag against each flanged joint. We then used visual computing, using neural networks, to compare the CAD drawings with the marked-up drawings.  We then generated a mapping exercise between the documents, creating a single, consistent flange register which was linked back to both sets of documents. In addition, we completed the information gaps assigning Pipe Specification, Pipe Size, material and flange information against each identified flanged connection.

Implementation
& Outcome

Product Utilised: Data as a Service, Knowledge Hub

Major Benefits

Time Efficiency

Petronas saved 70% of schedule time by utilising DIGATEX Knowledge Hub

Cost Savings

Petronas saved 70% of schedule time and 50% of manhours by utilising DIGATEX Knowledge Hub

Operational Continuity

Operational Continuity: Provided enhanced project control

Conclusion

As part of its commissioning activities for the Rapid Project, Petronas needed to develop a database of all the Flanged Connections. Pipe flanges are potential hazardous leak points and subject to strict inspection standards, so it’s vital that they are all identified, tagged and monitored. These flanges are documented in piping drawings (isometrics) which are originally produced from the 3D CAD model and then hard copies are used in the field to mark-up the drawings and link the flanges tags to the inspection reports.
